Session Title: Upstanding Education Beyond the Classroom
Holocaust Education is delivered by teachers to students the world over in
innovative ways. However, most of these programs do not attempt to reach the parents of students or the community in general.
After hearing from numerous parents that they wanted to learn about the
Holocaust because their sons and daughters were reporting a deep connection to Survivor testimony and lessons in History class, an annual series of evening seminars for community members was created. Presenters include Survivors, children and grandchildren of Survivors, academics from local Universities and members of various community organizations. The audience is diverse, and largely non-Jewish.
This session will provide an overview of these seminars and discuss the rationale
for engaging in this work. It will also provide concrete steps teachers can take to form partnerships with like-minded organizations in their areas, in order to take Holocaust Education beyond their classroom and into the larger community.
